Rooh Punjab Di - UC Davis, CA Bhangra Competition

April 9, 2005 - Another Big Show on the UC Davis Campus.

Rooh Punjab Di was getting so much hype because of the crazy lineup they had put together. LBC, Khalsa Junction and Sher Foundation highlighted the show and they placed in that exact order. For the second week in a row Khalsa Junction was left in awe. They were most definitely the favorites to win the competition and they tried to secure the #1 spot by changing their routine up by adding Bari Kholkay..the famous "truck" song.

But, the night belgoned to the most underrated and least respected groups of the 2004-05 bhangra season, LBC. They came out one last time this year and tore the roof down. Although they weren't as clean as their previous performances, they definitely deserved it. They rocked the house at CSUN Bhangra and Nachda Punjab but didn't place, so it's fair to say that LBC deserved to take 1st place.

As for Khalsa Junction, they delivered nuthing but perfection as they always do. Why they didn't place 1st for the second week in a row is a mystery. Some say the routine is getting old and others expect that much more from KJ. My prediction is they are going to head into Bruin with a brand spankin' new routine and take 1st just as they should.

Sher Foundation was my favorite group of the night. They had the cleanest routine, great song selection and almost prefect formations. The only thing that held them back from placing higher was lack of energy. Good luck at Bruin Bhangra Sher Foundation!

Other notable teams included SJSU, UCSC and UCR. San Jose State just brought it. I thought they were an underdog team that could have easily placed. I hope those guys stick together becasue they've got a bright future ahead of them. The girls from Santa Cruz rocked the house, but they didn't keep their formations straight. That probably hurt them the most, even though their energy level and overall performance was awesome. UC Riverside coed. What can I say? Great team, great song selection, great talent, perfect execution, but....choreography came back to haunt them. If they can change it up a little bit, UCR can join SJSU next year as major competitors.

As far as the atmosphere that night, the crowd was pretty dead. A few cheers were heard here and there, but nothing significant. The skits were pretty funny (Family Feud and U.S. Immigration) but the sound and lighting took away from the show.....Why are sound and lighting always a problem at these functions??

All in all, great show, the teams brought it, and the three best teams that performed won. Thats all we ask as an indian community. Fair judging is all we want so thank you Rooh Punjab Di. Nachda Punjab could learn a thing or two from you guys....SEE YA'LL AT BRUIN BHANGRA!!
