Ryan Singh - Dholicious

Last month, Ryan Singh’s debut album “Dholicious” was released from Scotland’s VIP records led by DJ VIPs. Singh was featured on the VIP Records compilation release “Pure Desi Vol 01,” and was recognized as one of the more promising new talents on the Desi scene. This album features eleven tracks, with Singh responsible for the compilation and percussion on the album.

What stands out the most from this album is not necessarily one or two tracks, but the overall composition. The entire album has its own unique sound, and the composition is excellent. The vocalists are chosen wisely, and Singh’s percussion skills are quite evident on the album.

For me, the lead tracks are “Nasha Jawani Da,” “Kuriye,” and “Bottlan de Dutt.” “Nasha Jawani Da” demonstrates the fusion of bajja and tabla that represents the sound we’ve come to expect from the Scotland VIP crew. “Bottlan de Dutt” is a great wedding track that is perfect for dancing with the parents. Although I don’t see it becoming a blockbuster, it’s still a nice track to dance to at weddings.

My favorite track on the album is “Kuriye.” This track debuts Jaswant Hira on the vocals, and the marriage between Hira’s voice and the awesome tumbi played by Singh synthesized a unique sound that had me hooked from the first time I heard the track.

Another track worth checking out is “Margaye Kuriye.” It is featured as an original and a remix featuring MC Special (a recent signing by VIP Records from the UK-based Genie Records) is quite debatably the best track on the album. It is nice dance floor track, and has already become popular at the clubs in the UK. However, my only criticism is that the “remix” is simply the same track, just with MC Special occasionally jumping in with “uh, yeah, that’s right” which is cool, and makes the track sound better, but come on? I think Ryan should’ve chosen one or the other, or at least changed the core beat on the track if he wanted to include a remix.

Overall, the entire album is worth listening to, and each track has its own unique compilation. I commend Singh for his work on this album. It looks like UK’s Serious Records and Scotland’s VIP Records might be leaving Untouchables UK as the leading producers of music on the Desi market! RDB aside, the Untouchables camp is getting left behind by guys like Aman Hayer and VIP Records! In the words of my cousins, “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Nevertheless, Ryan Singh earns www.punjabisongs.com’s 7 out of 10 and is definitely worth checking out.
